Since 1994, Vodacom has pioneered the South African mobile market. The new My Vodacom App is another first for South Africa. It combines must-have daily functions with some sexy tech, and puts it in the hands of millions of prepaid and postpaid customers, whether they’re on feature or smartphones.

The Challenge

The new platforms had to:

  •  Improve and align the customer experience across all mobile operating systems

  •  Simplify and redesign the UX and UI despite increasing Vodacom services.

  •  Most importantly, the solution had to significantly increase app downloads, monthly active users and revenue through the platform.

Our Solution

By combining must-have daily functions, cool tech and a fully responsive framework on all smartphone and feature phone devices, the app is servicing the needs of the entire Vodacom customer base.

The new platforms are simpler, faster and sexier and enriched with new features that add value to an evolving and more demanding customer base. But most importantly, the evolution has significantly increased app downloads, monthly active users and of course, revenue.

Technology

On top of the basic functionality, we added some cool tech.

In a first for South Africa, the smartphone app uses voice biometric authentication, so you no longer need to remember a password. You can simply and securely log in to the smartphone version by saying "At Vodacom my voice is my password".

The app also includes an Augmented Reality function, which provides immersive brand experiences to our customers.

Results

The app has been downloaded by over 3.1 million customers across all operating systems with a 72% increase in monthly active users in the past year and over 890 000 unique users accessing it every month.

100% increase in monthly revenue compared to the old App in January 2014, and outperforming the website and mobi site as the customers preferred channel.
